Consulting Client Attraction: Past, Present and Future

Here’s one of the biggest things I’ve learned with respect to marketing a consulting business…

Let me explain.

For as long as anyone can remember, consulting has always been sold through thought leadership.

For decades consultants have been educating their audience through books, trade magazine articles, newspaper columns, speaking engagements, local radio interviews, etc.

They attract curious learners and potential clients through these efforts, build new relationships and land new consulting deals.

Successful consultants have always consistently put themselves out there, stood out and sold their services.

You’d think that this would be obvious to all consulting business owners.

Unfortunately, it’s not.

Most consulting business owners today (new and experienced) ignore the wisdom of the past.

They tend to be comfortable in their safe harbour of trying to growing their business via referrals and introductions alone.

Referrals and introductions are great; they can get you a few clients, but they’re simply not predictable.

For predictable growth, you’ve got no choice but to aggressively put yourself out there and “pull” clients towards you.

The good thing about the opportunity today is that you’ve got a myriad of new approaches that can give you better reach than ever before, such as:

▶️ 🔥 Delivering a webinar or online training
▶️ 🔥 Writing Linkedin posts or articles
▶️ 🔥 Guest posting on popular industry blogs
▶️ 🔥 Nurturing an online community of potential clients

Digital consumption has hit the roof over the last couple of years. Don’t believe people who say B2B buyers aren’t looking online.

Buyers and influencers are online more than ever, learning, finding resources, recommending and buying.

If you want growth, the opportunity is out there. It’s up to you to take it by helping and educating your audience through thought leadership.
