There was one thing I used to get really frustrated with while looking for new consulting deals.
It also made me a bit jealous and insecure.
Everyone told me that consulting is a game played amongst friends.
“Relationships drive sales. You’ve got to be a part of the right 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 or be a friend of a friend to find the best consulting opportunities.”
I knew there was some truth to that. Relationships matter.
So I did my best to work my network and get referrals.
But I could only do this up to a point. Very soon, my referral well became dry.
I felt a lack of control and became nearly desperate. I constantly wondered if I should start looking for a corporate job again.
After months of struggle, it finally dawned on me…
Relationships matter, but you don’t need to be a part of a special old boy network or know the right “people.”
You can reach out to whoever you want, as long as you’re 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 and 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 to the other person BEFORE you seek their attention
All it takes is one or two conversations to start a new relationship. And that’s enough to give you a crack at a deal
Once I learned how to reach out and build relationships the right way, that’s when business became fun.
